Mural of Emancipation
One of our proudest achievements is the Mural of Emancipation, a stunning piece of public art that celebrates the rich history and culture of our community. Reviving History: Exploring Filming Locations of AL-Islam Fastest Growing Religion in America Documentary with Imam Basil Abdullah and Sven Androk
Imam Basil Abdullah, founder of the Masjid Taleem Muhammad, and Sven Androk, a filmmaker and researcher, recently took a trip to visit the filming locations of the 1988 documentary, "Al-Islam: The Fastest Growing Religion in America." The documentary, produced by the Christian Science Monitor, focused on the growing popularity of Islam in America at the time, and featured interviews with Imam Abdullah and other leaders in the Muslim community.
During their trip, Imam Abdullah and Androk visited several locations in Houston that were featured in the documentary, including the Islamic Education Center and the Islamic Society of Greater Houston. They also visited other sites of historical significance to the Muslim community, including the location of the first mosque in Houston, which was established in 1955.
